You all know what I am talking about- it fills up your e-mail and REAL mailbox every day. Sometimes you might open it and find out a surprise and that's exactly what has been happening at work this last week.
It all started out innocently enough, we got some really strange letters that are pretty much illegible from an unknown source. The most I could read was something about bonds, banks, lots of crazy account numbers, and our company helping them out somehow. Oh yeah... and it was hand written 4 PAGES LONG! My boss (aka my Dad) was kinda creeped out and told me to just throw it out. The first thing that came to my mind was, "I hope I don't have anthrax on me." And just as much as any other spam mail I eventually forgot about it.
Today I went to work for the first time in a few days and after collecting and sorting through our mail... TWO MORE letters from our mystery person! Now I was getting concerned! My office bud and sister Alyssa told me to google the address and I was glad that I did. Come to find out that it was from a retirement home! I called their phone number and the lady on the other line IMMEDIATELY knew, "Ohhh did you get something from ____," as she laughed. I told her that she was writing her Social Security and Credit Card No. on the letters. The woman did not seem concerned at all and reassured me, "...honestly it's all mumbo-jumbo. I would suggest you write her a letter back and tell her to stop writing to you. She wont listen to me if I tell her to stop. She does this to a lot of companies around town." I seriously could not believe it! My favorite part... in the last letter she also included an order form for checks that was partially filled out and had a sticker on it.
So next time you toss away junk mail, you might was to open it and look into it... you never know what you will find!
